Comedian Steve Martin’s Adaptation of Carl Sternheim's
Onstage at Actors’ Playhouse

CORAL GABLES - Imagine comedian Steve Martin’s version of the story of a woman who loses her frilly underpants by accident while watching a parade, then attracts her own parade of suitors who line up to woo her.

Steve Martin has done it again! Carl Sternheim's 1910 comedy has been re-invigorated by America's premier funnyman into a hilarious laugh-out-loud farce. Scandal erupts into spectacle, complete with off the wall humor, wordplay, and masterful banter. A funny and relevant a play today, as it was a century ago. Already laughing? Just wait until you see the popular comedian’s adaptation of this absurd tale.

The Underpants is about a comely wife, married to a boorish bureaucrat and longing for some adventure. She gets more than she bargained for after her lacy bloomers fall down around her ankles while she stands on her toes to watch a parade. Within minutes after her return home, several potential suitors who had witnessed the indiscretion line up to rent the rooms she and her husband have been trying for months to let.

Critics reviewing the New York production of the adaptation in 2002, complete with jokes you can almost hear Martin himself saying, said, “The Underpants was as funny and relevant a play today as the original story was a century ago.”Executive Producing Director Barbara Stein said, “We know our adult audiences enjoy the absurd Steve Martin humor and we’re delighted to add another one of his adaptations to our show repertoire this season.” The Underpants contains adult subject matter.

CORAL GABLES — For the parents of children who dream of performing on stage, TV or the silver screen, knowing where to look for help can be a challenge. Thankfully, in South Florida, parents needn’t look any further than their own backyard. Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre is now accepting enrollment for the popular Children’s Summer Theatre Camp and Teen One-Act Showcase.

Two sessions are offered: Session I will run weekdays June 14 – July 9, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Session II will be weekdays July 12 – August 6, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Each session of the summer camp provides hands-on experience and gives young actors the opportunity to explore the many aspects of theatre. Imagination and creativity are encouraged through development and writing of original monologues and scenes. The curriculum includes acting, theatre games, music, movement, improvisation and scene study. Guest artists assist the professional staff by teaching mime, make-up and scenic and costume design.

To gain the full scope of what makes theatre magic and learn how to prepare for a production, campers will perform a show of their own creation for family and friends during the final week.

Actors’ Playhouse is committed to creating opportunities for children to hone their acting skills for theatre, camera and musical theatre. Classes are not only designed to develop the talents and skills of children, but also to enhance their self-esteem, self-confidence and ability to communicate.

Actors’ Playhouse theatre students have been recognized and have appeared on Broadway and in regional theatres, as well as on popular television shows such as Ed McMahon’s Next Big Star. All teachers are experienced South Florida theatre professionals.
