"The past is never dead.
It's not even past."
William Faulkner

Some of our favorite Bettye Williams paintings are "companion" pieces. These are partner paintings - Abe and Eddie above, Bessie and Ben below. Each set of paintings shares a panoramic view of the cotton field and the evening sky - with one half of the tree in each painting.

Scratching out a living in the cotton fields, women, men and children worked along side each other. "Images of cotton pickers depict a way of life that was harsh. These folk, my mother being one of them, deserve a revered place in history for the years spent." BWms

Bettye signs her work "BWms" rather than spellingout her full name out of a sense of modesty.
